Lepisiota bipartita
Lepisiota bipartita
A bicoloured ant native to the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa, is not often seen in the hobby and is usually kept amongst more experienced ant enthusiasts. Highly aggressive, it defends its nest and food sources when disturbed. This efficient scavenger builds well-organised subterranean tunnels and occasionally nests in decaying wood.
Though its sting is mild, it can cause brief discomfort, similar to a light pinch. Lepisiota bipartita thrives in warm climates (22°C to 27.5°C) and prefers moderate to high humidity (50% to 70%). It typically inhabits dry, rocky areas like scrublands and sandy soils where it digs deep nests.
As a polymorphic species, it has varying worker sizes, with larger individuals as soldiers and smaller ones foraging and caring for the colony. Queens are around 8mm, while workers range from 3 to 5mm. Colonies are usually polygynous, with multiple queens, allowing them to grow quickly due to their short development time.
This species feeds on small insects, nectar, honeydew, and sugar water, often tending to aphids in the wild. This adaptable species is suitable for intermediate to advanced keepers who can provide a warm, dry, well-ventilated environment and prevent escapes. Its active nature and low maintenance make it an intriguing choice for those seeking a unique and fast-growing species.
It is illegal and strictly frowned upon to release any non-native ants into the wild.
