Camponotus pseudolendus (Giant Shimmering Carpenter Ant)

This variety of carpenter ant originates from Southeast Asia. Easily distinguishable by its large size and shiny gaster, Camponotus pseudolendus are an aggressive and remarkable species similar to Camponotus singularis in behaviour and appearance.

Queens of this species often reach 18-20mm in size with workers averaging between 7-15mm. Majors can reach an astonishing 17-18mm that rivals the size of the queen herself.

In the wild, nests are often found around the canopy floor of lowland forests in rural regions. Workers will often forage on the ground and arboreally in search of insects and nectars to feed their young with.

They are a fast species of ant when agitated and will try bite! Majors can and will pierce human skin.

Young colonies often do best in small naturalistic environments such as the Myrmeco nano and once outrgrown, can be transferred to similar formicariums or those with a Ytong/Plaster base. Alternatively, colonies do well in a bioactive naturalistic setup too.

Due to their subtropical origin colonies do not need to hibernate. Their nest should be kept between 23-27C with a humidity level of 50-60%.

It is illegal and strictly frowned upon to release any non-native ants into the wild.
